Following the tremendous success of its inaugural event, the Whangarei Maritime Festival is returning for a second year of maritime adventures. Set against the beautiful backdrop of the Town Basin on October 12-13, 2024, this free festival celebrates Whangarei’s rich maritime history and offers a host of exciting activities for all ages.
This year’s festival will once again welcome the legendary tall ship R Tucker Thompson, and for the first time, the New Zealand Navy will be joining the celebrations with special displays and interactive events. Families can also learn about career pathways in the maritime sector from MAST Academy with their informative talks on their school-to-work program.
Festival highlights include:
- Live music performances from local artists
- Fascinating maritime talks on subjects ranging from boat building to marine ecology
- Interactive flare and life raft demonstrations
- Scenic steamboat rides, back for their second year
- A bustling nautical market featuring artisan goods and crafts
- Interactive stalls on topics like scuba diving, marine reserves, and the history of vessels such as The Daring
- A fun-filled Kids’ Zone with activities for children of all ages
In addition, Whangarei Film Society will host a screening of Philosopher of the Sea on Tuesday, October 8th, and the Whangarei Cruising Club will showcase the documentary One Outstanding, about the famous Steinlager yacht, on Saturday night, October 12th—both part of the festival’s extended programming.
Local institutions such as Reyburn House, the Clock Museum, and Hihiaua Cultural Centre are also participating, reflecting the cultural depth of the region.
This event wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, including Northland Inc., More FM, Whangarei District Council, Cheers Weddings and Events, Whangarei Marina, Vital Signs, Sub Zero, CRC NZ, and many other local businesses. Their combined efforts have made this year’s festival bigger and better than ever.
Mark your calendars for an unforgettable weekend! Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s something for everyone at the 2024 Whangarei Maritime Festival.
