Over three days of racing, the NZ Millennium Cup enjoyed great weather, steady winds and close-fought racing, which culminated in a thrilling final race. With four of five entries tied for first place in the Millennium Cup division, the race truly was anyone’s, and was ultimately decided by a mere 19 seconds difference between winner Tawera, and runner up, Kealoha after a high-intensity drag race to the line.
Spectacular Janice of Wyoming came in third overall, while in the Pacific Division, Steinlager II stormed across the line for first, with Australian entry, Allegro – fresh from the Sydney to Hobart race – taking second place.
Mike and Tracey Mahoney, owners of this year’s regatta-winning yacht, Tawera, sent “a huge round of applause from the Tawera crew for a resoundingly successful and enjoyable regatta,” and we’re happy to say they’re looking forward to competing in 2017’s edition. At the close of the daily racing, yacht owners, crew and sponsors celebrated at exceptional events at both Russell and Paihia; making the most of the beautiful Bay of Islands scenery.
