Taupo

Discover Taupo

One of our world’s largest fresh water volcano lakes.

Lake Taupo—New Zealand’s largest lake (619 square kilometres) and the heart of the North Island.  Taupo activities include fishing, boating, walking, whitewater rafting and jet boating.

The powerful beauty of the volcanic landscape that surrounds Taupo provides a dramatic backdrop to everything you do here. The stunning beauty of Lake Taupō and its native bush dipped waters, secluded bays, and shores touched white with pumice sands is a unique experience.

Lake Taupo is a great vacation destination in both summer and winter. Trout fishing is a major attraction—it’s now over 100 years since the first trout fry were released into the lake and today it is one of the last true wild trout fisheries in the world.

Highlights around Taupo include the Tongariro National Park, the Orakei Korako Geyserland, the mighty Waikato River, Turangi (the North Island’s trout fishing capital) and the amazing Huka Falls.

Cross the bay and around Rangitira Point and float under the cliffs where the rock carvings drop straight into the deepest water. Venture further to Kinloch or the western bays and land on the pumice shore for lunch. Peer into the shallow waters with rippling sands and swimming trout or enjoy an evening meal and see the trout rise. This beautiful lake beneath the mountains is worth a boating adventure or scenic cruise.

The Lake Taupo region has some of New Zealand’s finest untouched, unspoilt, uncrowded country. Just about all of it is easy to get to.
